Who needs Medium Term Accommodation?

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is designed for NDIS participants who are in a transitional phase and need a temporary, supported place to live while waiting for their confirmed long-term housing arrangements to become available.

Common Situations Requiring MTA

Waiting for a Confirmed Long-Term Home: The person has secured a permanent housing solution (like a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) apartment, a Supported Independent Living (SIL) vacancy, or a private rental) but cannot move in yet.

Awaiting Disability Supports: The delay in moving is specifically because their disability supports aren’t ready, such as: Waiting for home modifications (renovations) to be completed in their new or existing home.

Waiting for Assistive Technology (AT) (like a ceiling hoist or complex equipment) to be delivered and installed.

Transitioning from a Facility: The person needs to move out of an unsuitable environment but their permanent housing is not ready.

This includes:

  • Discharge from a hospital or rehabilitation facility.
  • Moving from a residential aged care facility (often applicable to
    younger people).
  • Exiting a custodial setting (justice system).
  • Breakdown of Current Living Arrangement: They can no longer remain in
their current, unstable accommodation (e.g., a sudden breakdown of
    informal family/carer supports).
